O'Reilly has a nice article on the new Nonblocking IO API's in Java 1.4 - It looks pretty cool, and I might have to play around with it sometime in the near future... once Mac OS X gets a final 1.4 implementation. (Ok, I guess that's not totaly fair- I could go and download the 1.4 alpha which contains some of the new io stuff...)
