ASPOD has a great image today: A Protected Night Sky Over Flagstaff.

"Flagstaff now enjoys the status of being the first International Dark Sky City, and maintains a lighting code that limits lights from polluting this majestic nighttime view."

Lucky bastards. I wish I had that kind of view where I lived.

I recall several years ago during the Leonids, it wasn't very cloudy, so we drove out. . . and out . . .and out. . . and there was a frustrating amount of light just EVERYWHERE.

The naked human eye would not see a sky that looked _quite_ like that. A shorter camera exposure might have resulted in a more realistic picture. But, one time I drove a good 40 minutes out from Flagstaff on a clear night, and it was a lot closer to looking like that than I'd ever have imagined. It was incredible.
